Program: Supported Group Living
Status: Full-Time/ 18- month Contract
Pay Rate: $24.77
Location: Wellington, Port Elgin 
Hours of Work: 12hr shifts; up to 84 hours bi-weekly; every other weekend.

As a Support Worker with Community Living Owen Sound and District, you will be supporting people within their home to live their best lives. The Support Worker will support people with all aspects of daily living and explore opportunities to offer the people they support, so they can be as active as they choose to be within the community. The support worker will work with the people they support to encourage them to live independent lives where they are able to complete daily tasks and responsibilities independently.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work each day towards supporting people based on the mission, vision and values of Community Living Owen Sound and District to live their best lives;
  • Establishing respectful relationships with people, recognizing their rights as citizens; promoting their dignity and well-being;
  • Assist people to develop informed decision- making skills and exercising of choices;
  • Support each person as indicated by the person in their Individual Support Plan, Positive Behaviour Support Plan and any other protocols developed by the person supported;
  • Carry out established supports required for the health, safety and rights for the protection and promotion of each person;
  • Provide support in a person’s home; preparing nutritional meals, administering medication, assisting with personal care and other areas as needed or requested;
  • Accurately complete any required documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a Developmental Services Worker Program/Social Services Worker Program/Personal Support Worker Program and/or minimum 1 -year experience working with people with an intellectual disability;
  • Strong written, verbal and non-verbal skills;
  • Team player with an ability to work independently;
  • Comfortable with web- based technology;
  • Current First Aid/CPR;
  • Valid Driver’s License;
  • Experience providing support to people with complex needs is a strong asset.

The successful applicant will be dedicated to empowering individuals to achieve personal success and encourage as much independence and skill development as possible for the persons supported. The delivery of supports is individualized; involving but not limited to household management skills, relationship building, personal health and wellness and networking with families, individuals and the community resources to enhance the quality of life of the individual.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Self-directed: confident in exercising judgement and making decisions.
•Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
•Advocating for others.
•Ability to make decisions and exercise judgement within generally prescribed procedures, instructions and standards.
•The ability to be flexible in adapting to and working effectively within a variety of situations, and with various individuals or groups. Being adaptable in understanding and appreciating different and opposing perspectives on an issue or situation, adapting one’s approach as the requirements of a situation change.
•Counselling skills, behavioural interventions, conflict resolution, money management and interpersonal skill development.
•Familiarity with computers.
•Demonstrated willingness to collaborate effectively with others is critical to creating alignment within and across groups, and to providing high levels of services to those who are supported.
•Maintain stamina and performance and to act effectively under pressure.
•Demonstrate a positive work performance.
•Must have a valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle.
•Must be able to adhere to IPAC (Infection Protection and Control) practices and wear Personal Protective Equipment when and where applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Have formal knowledge of developmental disabilities. This knowledge would typically be acquired by obtaining a two-year related Community College diploma.
•Have a minimum of two years with related experience with a minimum of one year in the provision of direct support for people with developmental disabilities.
•A good understanding of dual diagnosis.
•Current First Aid and CPR certification. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification is required within 30 days of hire.
